As the guns fell silent and the troops were resurrected, the 2004 Battle
of Westport Reenactment concluded on a high note as warmer temperatures and sunny skies illuminated the battlefield. Spectators
enjoyed an intense and well-scripted battle and began to make their way back into the modern world. With our cameras
and equipment already packed away in our car, we were also ready to leave the scene. Suddenly we were summoned by
a reenactor who had a special guest riding along with him in a period wagon.
Much to our amazement we learned that the special guest was the 93 year
old granddaughter of a Civil War General. Brigadier General William Ferguson Slemons of the 2nd Cavalry Brigade who rode with
General Sterling Price during the Civil War. Proudly displaying her medals, this warm and friendly woman began to tell her
remarkable story.
