Since this tactical was not announced to the public, few spectators were present and only those who stayed hours after
the afternoon battle were able to enjoy the spectacle. However, as soon as the roar of the cannon fire burst across the historic Arkansas battlefield, more onlookers made their way to the sounds of the guns. The thunderous cannon and gunfire echoed across the plain and was heard for a few miles away!

The infantry and artillerymen displayed a great ability to load and
fire their weapons in total darkeness. Several volleys and rounds were discharged but the entire firefight lasted no more than 15 minutes or so. The Federals of the Frontier Brigade were the first to cease their fire much to the chagrin of the anxious Confederates. "Waz a matter Billy Yank?, you can't quit now!  Where ya going???" "Come back here and fite!" Ignoring the rowdy rebels, the Union boys quietly reformed their lines and marched back up the hill to their camp. This
was the first night battle I had witnessed and was quite impressed! More such engagements would certainly add more excitement to these events.
