(Story by Captain
David Cosloy 1st Kansas Volunteer Infantry Company D,Photos by Michelle Martin)

The presentation of the new colors was made
at the Sunday morning parade of the Frontier Battalion. First, the old colors were furled and removed to the camp area by
the color guard and the new colors were presented by some of the ladies representing the town of Lawrence, Kansas. The new
colors were presented to the brigade and the color guard was posted back in the ranks.

The previous captain of the 1st Kansas, Robert
Cuevas, accepted the new colors and the brigade gave three cheers for the new flag.
The new flag bears the 34 stars of the flag
and the words "First Kansas Infantry".

Bentonville, Arkansas--November 9, 2003
The First Kansas Volunteer Infantry retired the old national
colors this weekend at Bentonville Battlefield and promptly initiated the new colors at the Sunday afternoon battle. The new
colors are made with a more accurate size and material. The old flag was canvas and was not the proper size. They had served
well, however, for more than 12 years. The new flag is 6 feet by 6 and one-half feet in size. The material is silk. The new
flag will require more protection from the elements, but should serve the unit well into the future.
